Why AIDS is an Important Issue for Everyone

The boy is only two years old. He’s sitting alone in a small hut; an
isolated village rises in the background. His skin is stretched over
his bones like a cocktail dress might stretch on a mannequin. But
instead of oozing sex appeal the scene represents impending death. This image — reflecting the perils of the 24.7 million people living with AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa — is what the average American most commonly associates with the disease. This stereotype is partially correct; almost two-thirds of people living with AIDS are from sub-Saharan Africa (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2006). But what many fail to realize is the tremendous impact the disease has on a global scale. AIDS affects every country in some way.

An estimated 1.2 million people are living with the disease in the
United States alone. More than 550,000 lives have been lost in our
country already (KFF, 2007). Each life had a family, friends, people
who loved them, a path. Each life was cut short. This is why the work
of the Regional AIDS Project is so important -- AIDS affects Kansans, just like it affects people abroad. Every life is important.
